If you had hip surgery after July 2003, you may have received a defective hip. DePuy recalled its ASR™ XL Acetabular System and DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System on August 20, 2010.
Depuy Orthopaedics, a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson, removed their ASR hip replacement system from the market earlier this year. They also warned physicians about a high rate of failure of the device. When the product was initially removed from the market, DePuy denied that the issue had anythingto do with the safety of their product.
Statitics revealed that 13% of patients who received the ASR total hip replacement system have already endured a revision surgery. On March 6, 2010, DePuy sent a letter to doctors revealing the ASR hip implant syste was linked to a high falure rate.
The recall means that additional testing is needed and an additional surgery may be necessary.
